In seven movements, the composer explores different facets of Brazilian music, presenting an instrumentation rarely encountered in the chamber music repertoire.
BRAZILIAN SUITE NO. 5 names each movement after a Brazilian musical genre or form — Canção, Choro, Xote, Marcha-Rancho, Coral, Choroso and Lamento. In João Marcondes’ writing, the expressiveness of Brazil’s rhythmic and musical traditions merges with melodic lyricism, resulting in a rich and distinctly personal compositional voice.
The Duo Música Viva São Paulo — formed by cellist Marialbi Trisolio, member of the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra (OSESP), and bass trombonist Darrin C. Milling, recipient of the Carlos Gomes Merit Medal, Edwards Instrument Company artist and graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music — delivers performances of technical precision and excellence, worthy of the work’s singular character.
