João Marcondes

João Marcondes is a composer and music educator in the truest sense of the word. His career brings together creation, research, and teaching with a rare dedication to music and the training of new generations of artists. Marked by both technical precision and aesthetic sensitivity, his work demonstrates a deep understanding of the elements that shape musical language — harmony, rhythm, timbre, form, and history — seamlessly integrating them into an authorial voice that bridges tradition and modernity.

Among his main influences are French and Russian composers, as well as the Brazilian Modernist ideals of Oswald and Mário de Andrade, which inform his artistic and humanistic vision of art. Holding a Master’s degree in Education, Art, and Cultural History under the supervision of historian Arnaldo Daraya Contier — of whom he was the last advisee — Marcondes is also a specialist in Brazilian music pedagogy, with degrees in both music performance and music education. He has published over seventy books and created seven officially accredited courses, contributing decisively to the development of musicians and composers across Brazil.

Recognized as one of the leading music educators of his generation, Marcondes has lectured and taught in 23 countries across Latin America, Europe, and Asia, covering topics such as composition, improvisation, and Brazilian music. His pedagogical work is defined by the encouragement of aesthetic diversity and continuous innovation, fostering critical thinking and creativity in his students.

As a composer, he has written more than 700 works for solo instruments and chamber ensembles — including duos, trios, quartets, quintets, and mixed chamber groups — many of which have been recorded in recent years and featured in film and ballet soundtracks.

At the forefront of a new generation of Brazilian composers, João Marcondes founded seven composer collectives, bringing together around fifty young creators. Within these projects, he serves as mentor and producer, promoting the dissemination of new Brazilian chamber music and fostering a vibrant space for dialogue, experimentation, and artistic excellence.
