Unexpected Conections

In a singular meeting of timbres, the album brings together works of European Romanticism that unite violin, piano, and bassoon, revealing different perspectives on this ensemble.

In the Trio Pathétique in D minor, Mikhail Glinka crafts a pianistic writing that spans the instrument’s full range, while violin and bassoon weave a dialogue of melodic and timbral contrasts of great expressive intensity. Niccolò Paganini’s Duetti concertanti, recently rediscovered, are virtuosic and luminous works that demand sensitivity and technical mastery from their performers. Johannes Brahms’s Trio in A minor, Op. 114, completes the album in this unprecedented instrumentation — a rare opportunity to hear one of the great works of late Romanticism outside its original scoring.

Outstanding performers bring the album the depth this repertoire demands. Emmanuele Baldini, concertmaster of OSESP since 2005, performs as a soloist in leading concert halls across Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Oceania. Lucas Thomazinho, a graduate of USP and the New England Conservatory (Boston, USA), won his first national competition at age nine and has taken first prizes in competitions in Portugal and the United States. Sandra Ribeiro, a graduate of the Escola Municipal de Música de São Paulo, was Young Soloist of the Orquestra Experimental de Repertório and currently serves as Principal Bassoon of the Orquestra do Theatro São Pedro, in São Paulo.
