The Brazilian accordionist Eliomar Landim presents his new album 6 Preludes and Fugues, the first original work in his acclaimed discography.
A graduate of the Beethoven Music Conservatory in São Paulo, Landim distinguished himself early on as a semifinalist in the Prelúdio competition (TV Cultura), becoming the only accordionist ever to reach this milestone in the program’s history. With a career focused on classical and contemporary repertoire, he is also the composer of the Concerto for Accordion and Orchestra No. 1 in B minor — one of the rare Brazilian works written for this ensemble.
6 Preludes and Fugues consists of 12 original pieces that engage in a dialogue with the Baroque tradition through a more contemporary language. Inspired by the works of J. S. Bach, the project combines the classical structure of preludes and fugues with modern sonorities and elements of Astor Piazzolla’s nuevo tango. Written for free-bass accordion — a system with bass keys capable of playing single notes, allowing greater harmonic freedom — the compositions explore rhythmic combinations, modulations, ostinatos, and three-voice polyphonic textures, showcasing not only Landim’s creativity as a composer but also his exceptional technical mastery and sensitivity as a performer.
The album brings to light a balanced synthesis of tradition and innovation, establishing itself as an important contribution to the modern solo accordion repertoire. With determination and extraordinary consistency, Landim demonstrates that today’s chamber music can — and should — broaden its instrumental palette, benefiting from projects that engage and inspire new audiences.
