In Homelands, the Vaughan String Quartet brings together contemporary works that connect Brazilian composers Marcílio Onofre and Beetholven Cunha with Canadian composer David Dykstra and Italian composer Nino Rota — the latter represented by a rarely performed string quartet.

Formed by Brazilians Vladimir Rufino (violin I) and Fabiola Amorim (viola), and Italians Mattia Berrini (violin II) and Silvia Buttiglione (cello), the ensemble sought to unite the cultural heritage of their countries of origin with that of Canada, where they currently reside. In this way, Homelands offers a panorama of different cultures, juxtaposing lyrical and delicate pieces with works of vibrant rhythms and expressive intensity.

Nino Rota’s String Quartet reveals the musical ingenuity of the great Italian master — renowned for his iconic film scores for Federico Fellini — in a work of captivating melody and distinctive rhythmic wit. Marcílio Onofre’s Immigrant Quartet “Skeletons” resonates with the ensemble’s own immigrant experience, transforming personal journeys into a celebration of cultural convergence and resilience. Curious and Cold by David Dykstra was inspired by an interpretation of the Canadian national anthem, encapsulating the quartet’s adaptability within Canada’s vast and icy landscape through rich sonic metaphors. Beetholven Cunha’s String Quartet No. 6 emerges as a powerful homage to the traditions of northeastern Brazil, intertwining folk elements with the restlessness of cultural innovation.

The selected repertoire not only highlights the quartet’s exceptional technical mastery, but also reflects its commitment to expanding the classical repertoire with new voices and fresh sonic perspectives.
