Oboist Joel Gisiger presents his debut album J. S. BACH: SONATAS, BWV 1020 – 1030B & PARTITA IN A MINOR, BWV 1013, featuring reinterpretations of a triptych of masterpieces by Johann Sebastian Bach.
A musician with solid training, Gisiger studied under the legendary Lothar Koch at the Berlin Philharmonic Academy and later performed as a soloist in the Berliner Philharmoniker under the direction of Claudio Abaddo, and for three decades with OSESP. With a meticulously chosen repertoire, Gisiger invited pianist Olga Kopylova and cellist Jin Joo Doh for the recordings. The reinterpretation of the pieces, played on instruments different from those originally written for, brought a contemporary edge to the works, highlighting new sound nuances with special attention to dynamics and articulations.
It is a common understanding that Bach was and continues to be one of the most important composers in the history of Western music. His work remains current, expressive, and influential. In this album, Gisiger’s reinterpretations present a unique combination of refined technique, emotive sensitivity, and melodic fluidity. The musician reaffirms his prominence as an extraordinary soloist, revitalizing the role of the oboe in the Baroque repertoire.
