Twice nominated for the Latin Grammy and the recipient of numerous awards both in Brazil and abroad, pianist Clara Sverner developed her musical training at the Conservatoire de Genève in Switzerland and at the Mannes College of Music in New York City. Her artistic journey has consistently been shaped by a rigorous and thoughtful approach to both international and Brazilian repertoire.
A complete artist with a fluent command of classical music, Sverner has released landmark albums of Brazilian popular music over the past decades. Her lyrical and introspective style is evident in the refined repertoire chosen for this new release. Twelve Waltzes brings together works by composers from different periods, offering a curated synthesis of her pianistic legacy, interpreted with delicate precision and remarkable narrative cohesion.
The project was inspired by a personal impression Sverner experienced while playing Chopin’s Waltz No. 7, in which she perceived an intrinsic melancholy interwoven with the rhythm of the dance. Motivated by this sentiment, she selected pieces that resonate with similar emotional depth. The album includes distinctive interpretations of Valse Triste by Sibelius, La plus que lente by Debussy, three Choro Waltzes by Francisco Mignone, Morena by Cristóvão Bastos, and Valsa Só by Ronaldo Miranda, along with five waltzes by Chopin.
The album cover was designed by Muti Randolph, a Brazilian visual artist internationally acclaimed for his immersive works that blend light, movement, and space. For Twelve Waltzes, he created a fluid and translucent visual composition that alludes to the grace and motion of the waltz. Once again, Clara Sverner offers listeners a collection of performances delivered with soul, sensitivity, and the rare authority of a truly great interpreter.
