Mignone: Complete Original Works for Solo Guitar

In his first solo album, guitarist Francisco Luz focuses on the music of Brazilian composer Francisco Mignone (1897 – 1986). This is the first complete recording of the composer’s original works for guitar, which includes unpublished and/or still little-known songs.

Francisco Mignone had in the poet, writer and musicologist Mário de Andrade, one of the founders of the Brazilian modernist movement, his main aesthetic mentor. Even though he is not a guitarist, Mignone left fundamental works for the instrument, including adaptations and versions for the instrument, from countless of his compositions originally written for other instruments and formations.

The first four works date from the 1950s – all short-lived and more popular. Already in 1970, the two great cycles: the 12 Studies, which involve transcendental technique with Brazilian rhythms and urban and regional popular music; and the 12 Brazilian Waltzes in the Form of Studies, all in minor keys, with a darker sound and nocturnal character, with melodies reminiscent of serenades. His cycle of original works for the instrument ends with Batuque in 1980, when the composer honors the classical-popular piano of Brazilian virtuoso Ernesto Nazareth.
