New Frequency, a collective of young composers guided by music educator and Souza Lima College coordinator João Marcondes, releases Opus 3 – an album that unfolds through an engaging dialogue between clarinet and cello, marked by depth and expressiveness. The composers explore a wide range of instrumentations, creating works that transcend conventional boundaries.
Inspired by Marcondes’ own Sobre Lobos e Pássaros, the album pays tribute to Heitor Villa-Lobos and his iconic composition Assovio a Jato, celebrating the intersection between music from past eras and the collective’s contemporary aspirations. New Frequency not only honors the legacy of the masters but also projects bold visions for the future, reaffirming music as a timeless bridge across generations and aesthetics.
Among the highlights is Até que Não Viva Mais Eu (Instrumental), by Cristhian Squetini, which articulates the enduring conflict between the physical and the spiritual. Its fluid, introspective melody serves as a harmonious link, balancing the duo. In Terra Devastada, Leonardo Martins draws inspiration from T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land, weaving together tragedy, sarcasm, and mysticism in rich, multifaceted atmospheres. Through the use of ostinatos, Martins gives the piece a distinctive identity, exemplifying the group’s ability to fuse literary classics with contemporary music.
Blending refined artistic creation with a strong educational foundation, New Frequency stands out as a singular and innovative voice in today’s musical landscape.
