Chiquinha Gonzaga (1847-1935), composer and conductor from Rio de Janeiro, is undoubtedly the greatest female personality in the history of Brazilian popular music and one of the greatest expressions of the struggle for women’s freedoms and empowerment. Restless and versatile, Chiquinha has always been way ahead of her time, not only challenging social values from a prejudiced era by separating from a marriage imposed by her father, but also by making a living on music. Overcoming difficult adversities, her strong and cheerful temperament made the piano a voice against oppression.
In this album, CLARA SVERNER continues what she pioneered in 1980, when she recorded two albums with the work of Chiquinha, placing her in the spotlight again. Clara dedicates once again to the composer’s pianistic work, showing the beauty and harmony of Chiquinha’s marches, polkas, maxixes and tangos. Her confident and sensitive performances highlight the rhythmic richness and density of the compositions, which contributed so much to popular music in Brazil.
