A masterpiece from the creative apogee of the 18th century, Mozart’s piano sonatas require great preparation from the performer, since they present a high degree of technical difficulty, and are imbued with a rare aesthetic sense in form and expression. At the same time, they have enchanting simplicity, being pieces that instantly captivate the listener with a mix of spontaneity and musical perfection.
In this second volume, Clara Sverner gifts us with three more sonatas: K. 283 in G major, K. 284 in D major and K. 309 in C major. Among them, perhaps the most impressive is K. 284, requested by Baron Taddhäus von Dürnitz, an amateur bassoonist, who asked the composer to write a piece in the “French style”. With three movements, the sonata ends with a dazzling Theme with Variations, which brought new achievements in the development of piano technique, opening new paths, which would later be followed and developed by Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Brahms. Mozart was proud of this sonata and insisted on performing it himself in 1777 at the inauguration of the new Stein pianos in Augsburg.
Restless and unique, Clara has built over an expressive and successful career a legacy of memorable recordings that reflect her permanent boldness. When performing the eighteen sonatas for piano by Mozart, the pianist covers her interpretations with vivid colors and aesthetic precision, without ever losing sight of balance, offering a majestic reading of the Mozartian universe.
