Composer João Marcondes presents Vertigo for String Quartet, his fourth series written for string quartet. The work invites listeners to immerse themselves in continuous sonic cycles that move between diatonic, modal, and atonal languages, guiding the mind into a state of suspension and reflection. Unlike ordinary dizziness, this vertigo unfolds through paradoxes: accelerated motion while standing still, or the sensation of slow motion at extreme speed.
The Topázio Quartet performs the work under Marcondes’s own direction, revealing nuances that highlight the intensity and expressive power of his writing. The recording was engineered by the acclaimed Adonias Junior at Estúdio Arsis, ensuring both technical refinement and artistic depth.
With Vertigo for String Quartet, Marcondes reaffirms his role in the renewal of Brazilian chamber music, offering an inventive creation that brings together aesthetic boldness and emotional resonance.
